April is breaking new ground in approaches to mental health nursing within secure settings.
Since qualifying and working as a mental health nurse in a prison setting, she has been nominated as "Nurse of the Year" within her company and has been asked to participate in steering groups for the development of services for those with learning disabilities.
She is currently working towards a qualification in eye movement desensitising and reprocessing therapy, with a view to pursuing a specialism in post-traumatic stress disorder. This passion was sparked during lectures at AV, which recognised how traumatic experiences lead to many mental health conditions.

What their colleagues say
“April has introduced several positive changes to the service ranging from a learning disability algorithm to creating a Covid diary during the pandemic, which indicates that she is flexible and ready to accept the challenges of the times and environment we practice in. Thank you to AV for educating the next generation of nurses. In this particular case, I think you have done an outstanding job.”
