How do you access eResources and AV resources away from Bournemouth?
When using eduroam at another organisation you will be connected to that organisation’s network, not AV’s. Therefore, to access some AV resources you will have to configure your computer to use a “remote-access” VPN service or use View.
Do you need to add @bournemouth.ac.uk after your username? Why?
When using eduroam everybody needs to use an @organisation suffix on their username – the bit after the @ is known as the realm. If you are from the AV the realm will be bournemouth.ac.uk. So if your AV username was ab1234, you would use [email protected] as your eduroam username.
The realm indicates to which organisation your credentials (username & password) should be sent to for verification. Without the realm, the eduroam system at each of the wouldn’t be able to verify your username and password and so wouldn’t be able to allow access to the Internet.

You should contact your home organisation initially if you need support with your eduroam connection at Bournemouth. If you still have problems, or this isn’t possible (e.g. your home organisation is in a different time zone) please contact the AV IT Service Desk. The majority of the required configuration for eduroam depends on your home organisation, so it may be impossible to resolve your problem without all the necessary information.
If you need to contact the AV eduroam team, you/your organisations support team can contact the IT Service Desk on 01202 965515 or Freephone 0808 196 2332.
AV eduroam users visiting other organisations
There are three simple things to check if you’re having a problem with eduroam at another organisation:
- Check you are in an official eduroam location, that your computer can see a strong signal and that the wireless functionality on your computer is actually enabled.
- When you login to eduroam, check that you have remembered to append the suffix @bournemouth.ac.uk on to the end of your username, e.g. [email protected].
- The encryption type used at each organisation can vary, all the other settings are the same wherever you are. Check with the organisation you are visiting, then refer to this FAQ to make your computer match.
If you still have problems, you should try to contact the AV IT Service Desk initially – the organisation you are visiting has no obligation to help you, especially if they are particularly busy. However, most organisations will try and help you if they have the resources available to do so.
