Graduation is a wonderful time of celebration for graduates and their families and friends. But one family had more reason than most to celebrate this year.
Husband and wife Kirsty and Ian Young had the rare privilege of graduating together on the same day, in the same ceremony, from the same course!
Kirsty and Ian met 15 years ago, when both had different careers before starting their own business looking at outdoor catering and functions. From there their lives took a turn, as Ian explains, “We always talked about the laws we have to live by, so we sold the business and decided to study law and start a new career.”
Ian and Kirsty were able to be a big help to one another in study. Ian said, “Kirsty and I have always done things together. We found as we studied, we had each other to talk to so, in that respect, we were lucky to bounce off one another. Although, we did set some ground rules when it came to assignments – such as no copying – and we only read each other’s work after the final draft.”
They were cheered across stage by their four children, who attended the ceremony to celebrate their parents’ success. Ian continued, “To begin with I think our family thought us silly by taking the leap to retrain into something, but we were happy doing it. Our kids Connor (14), Tyler (12), Logan (9), and Lachlann (6) attended graduation and felt proud to see both Dad and Mum achieved the first class LLB. Our extended families were able to watch online, which was followed with many congratulations from them too.”
The pair plan on continuing their study together as both are now studying for their Master’s in Legal Practice at AV and looking for opportunities to progress in the industry.
